About A.P.P.S.

A.P.P.S. is the Appalachian Popular Programming Society and is responsible for the majority of entertainment brought to ASU. APPS is comprised of seven different councils each of which provides a specific form of entertainment. APPS programs events in such venues as Legends, I.G. Greer, the Plemmons Student Union , Farthing Auditorium, Crossroads Coffeehouse , Holmes Convocation Center, Greenbriar Theater, and Varsity Gym. APPS is truly student run, and provides members the opportunity to create programs they feel the campus as a whole will enjoy. The members take a show, program, festival, or film from concept to reality. If it is going on at ASU, it is probably going on because of APPS. Funding for APPS and the events it helps provide comes from ASU student fees.

For twenty one years the Appalachian Popular Programming Society (A.P.P.S.) has been bringing the best in college entertainment to Appalachian State University. A.P.P.S. is the student run programming board of the university whose purpose is to serve as a all-campus programming organization. ASU students select, plan, present, and promote popular and social co-curricular programming for ASU students, faculty and staff. A.P.P.S. is the largest student organization and sponsors over 200 events per year. During the 2008-2009 academic year, A.P.P.S. programs were attended by over 43,000 people!

Since its inception, A.P.P.S. has brought such artists to campus such as: Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Colbie Caillat, Dave Matthews, Chicago, James Taylor, Sister Hazel, Allison Krauss, Bela Fleck, Outkast, North Mississippi Allstars, Lonestar, Nappy Roots, Black Eyed Peas, Jimmy Fallon, David Spade, Vertical Horizon and John Mayer.

A.P.P.S. consists of seven different programming councils. Each council focuses on one segment of programming. Club Shows features local and regional up-and-coming bands. Council for Cultural Awareness (CCA) main focus is to provide diverse multicultural programming. Appalachian Heritage provides entertainment that is traditional to the Appalachian region. Films showcases a variety of films ranging from new releases to old favorites. Stage Show brings the top local, regional, and national acts to Legends (the university's nightclub). Legends - The University's Nightclub

All ASU students and their guests are offered an uniquely original campus experience: Legends! This is the name chosen by students for their own nightclub and social center.

Begun over 20 years ago in a remodeled Winn Dixie Supermarket, it answered the question, "Where can students go safely to socialize and be entertained without driving mountain roads at night?" Legends is the only facility of it kind in North Carolina, and research has not found another university in the Eastern U.S. duplicating its services. Its goals are to provide ASU students the best entertainment, be it musical, comedy, theater, etc. from both regional and national artists. Previous performers have included Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Outkast, Jimmy Fallon, Widespread Panic, Nickel Creek, Collective Soul, Carrot Top, the Wailers, Edwin McCain, and Hootie and the Blowfish.

All shows are selected by one of seven A.P.P.S. councils, each made up of volunteers committed to programming and producing entertainment for their follow students. On most 'show' occasions student of proper age may elect to bring beer or wine to Legends. Upon entering and providing valid identification, their beverage is deposited behind the soft drink counter in coolers where it is released to them, one at a time.

The club is staffed by students who have completed a certification course in alcohol awareness. They are in charge of monitoring the safety of students and guests, as well as maintaining the building. Over 24 students are employed as 'event staff.' These students also work shows at Plemmons Student Union and I. G. Greer Theater.

Besides being a showcase for public concerts and dances, Legends is also utilized each week for meetings of campus groups. Very few rooms are large enough to hold 300 to 400 students for a meeting. Legends can hold up to 1000! Many of the 200 or more campus clubs and organizations have rented the facility for their fundraisers or parties, and each year Greek Week fills the room to its capacity for its highlight, the annual "lip sync" contest.

Having one of Western North Carolina's largest dance floors, and being equipped with a first-class sound and light system has helped Legends earn a reputation as on to the top entertainment facilities in the area. Now other universities come to Boone to investigate the possibility of location a similar facility on their campus.
